Making the Case Featuring Daveed Gartenstein-Ross

This edition of Making the Case features Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, author of Bin Laden’s Legacy (Wiley, 2011). The book reviews the first ten years of the U.S.’s “war on terror.” The volume examines the evolution of al Qaeda’s strategy, and argues that America’s overarching failure to understand the jihadi group has led to grave strategic missteps on the U.S.’s part. Foreign Policy has called the book a “remarkable and audable work” that creates “both a road map and a score card for the 10 years since the 9/11 attacks redefined America’s sense of security.”
Gartenstein-Ross is a regular lecturer for the Naval Postgraduate School’s Leader Development and Education for Sustained Peace (LDESP) courses, providing instruction to members of the U.S. military preparing for deployments to the Horn of Africa, Afghanistan, and the Persian Gulf. He also designs training courses and specific modules for use by U.S. government agencies, including the State Department’s Office of Anti-Terrorism Assistance.
Gartenstein-Ross’s writing has appeared in Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, Reader’s Digest, and The Wall Street Journal Europe, among others. He has written or edited eight books and monographs, and has testified before the U.S. Senate’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. He is a Ph.D. candidate in world politics at the Catholic University of America, where he received a M.A. in the same subject. He earned a J.D., magna cum laude, from the New York University School of Law, and a B.A., magna cum laude, from Wake Forest University.
