BACKGROUND INFORMATION
WJCU is Always Here for You: Radiothon 2008
(Sunday, February 17th thru Sunday, February 24th)
Our goal this Radiothon is to raise $40,000 and our theme is “WJCU is Always Here for You”, which we’ll explain by establishing a little context. To begin with, in the summer of 2006, WJCU finally succeeded in completely rehabilitating our ramshackle FM transmission facility. The project also allowed us to increase our signal power to 2500 Watts, and cost approximately $106,000. While we were able to finish the project, we used up our entire cash reserve saved over four years from previous Radiothons.
Last year, almost all of the $32,000 dollars we raised went into improving our digital infrastructure. This involved creating a dedicated fiber-optic link across campus to the university’s IT facility, and installing a new server, 5 new PC’s, as well as new network switches and routers that have allowed us to upgrade our webstream, and launch a special events streaming channel.
Unfortunately, our University-provided operating budget is actually less now than it was in 2000. This is money used to meet our rapidly increasing every-day expenses, so only a successful Radiothon 2008 will allow us to maintain and improve WJCU in a way that accommodates vital services such as our improved web presence, podcasting, playlisting, and more opportunities to produce new community-based arts and public affairs programming.
So that’s why we’ve chosen this year’s theme of “WJCU is Always Here for You”…because the only way we can continue to keep WJCU thriving and surviving is with your financial support.
