Two of Cleveland’s cultural gems are taking off this month and you don’t want to miss out! May 2010 will see Opera Cleveland’s performances begin in The State Theatre at Playhouse Square and The Asian Festival kicks off later this month in the East 30th Street Neighborhood.

WJCU Teams Up With Relay For Life

WJCU was honored at The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life as “The Last Team Standing” helping to raise over $30,000 this weekend for cancer research.

88.7FM volunteered its services to DJ the 18-hour event in University Heights with WJCU personalities Mandey Corsi (Team Captain) of “The Heights”, Katie Sickels of “She’s Got The Beat”, Jack Morton of “Midnight Sun”, Lydia Munnell and Anna Schade of “The Heights”, Eric Simna of “NEO Rocks”, Gene Natale of “The Rock”, John Roddy of “The Vindictive Alarm Clock”, Diega Bravo of “Latin Lingo” and WJCU’s weather reporter Rob Duns.

Appearances were made by many other members of the WJCU staff throughout the day and night committed to help find a cure for cancer.

Caribbean Groove Honored in 2010 Criss List Awards

Caribbean Groove’s Leisa Engel and DJ Chubby have been honored in the 2010 Criss List Awards!

Recognizing the best of the best in Cleveland’s Caribbean Community, Leisa Engel and DJ Chubby won for “Best Radio Personalities” and DJ Chubby also won “Best Selector (DJ)” at the March 14th awards bash held at Caribbean Flavor in Cleveland. Hosted by the one and only Organik Sound, the show also featured live performances by 2008 award winning-artists Sunshade, Umojah Nation and Jah Messenger.

Top Metal Bands Playing to Support WJCU!

Top metal bands are converging on The Breakfast Club in Lakewood to put on two rocking shows to benefit WJCU during our annual Radiothon which kicks off Sunday February 14th, and runs through Sunday February 21st.

On Friday February 19th, Cryptkicker, Suede Brothers, Venomin James, Lick The Blade and ESD team up while on Saturday February 20th, Shok Paris, Eternal Legacy, Ground Zero, Soulless, and Archetype highlight a night of metal you don’t want to miss!

Tickets are just $7 and all proceeds benefit WJCU–keeping non-commercial, non-corporate controlled radio alive and well in Cleveland. Both shows start at 7:00 pm, doors opening at 6:30.

Auburn Records is owned by Bill Peters, host of Metal on Metal, heard every Friday on WJCU from 6:30-9:30 pm (EST).

Community Blood Drive in University Heights

Did you know that donating blood for one hour can save as many as three lives? Be a hero and donate blood today Tuesday, January 27th at John Carroll University’s Murphy Room inside the DJ Lombardo Student Center (Click HERE for a map and directions). The American Red Cross drive runs from 12pm to 7pm.

Local Club Helping Those In Need

Local jazz club, Nighttown has found a way to help out those in need with a promotion called Hungry First Mondays. On the first Monday of each month from April until December, Nighttown will donate $5.00 with each meal served to the Cleveland Food Bank.

Nighttown owner, Brendan Ring tells us his inspriation and some of the side effects of the promotion in its first month.

Cleveland’s All City Art Show will have a sneak preview partyt this Friday from 6:00 - 9:00 PM at the Arts Collinwood Gallery. Featureing art from all ages and artistic backgrounds. This year looks to exceed the 200 submissions of last year!

While on Waterloo on Friday night, it is also opening night for the Upstage Player presentation of Joeseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat!

State of the City

Mayor Edward J. Kelley of Cleveland Hights described some of the plans submitted by the city for the coming Economic Stimulis funds granted to the State of Ohi0. Among those are, envriromental and neighborhood stabilization for the city.
