The Outspoken Cyclist – 05/28/2011

A note of caution about this week’s show: it contains ranting, raving and general crankiness brought on by being rain-drenched, wind-blown, and thunder-struck during one of the stormiest Springs on record in the Midwestern U.S. And to top it off, one of northeast Ohio’s most respected judges, Charles “Chip” Henry was struck and killed by a car while riding his bike near his Geauga County home this week.

But never fear, we have two great guests to help remind us that great things continue to happen in the world of bicycling.

First up is Steve Frothingham, the Editor of Velonews.com, the premier online resource for information about competitive cycling around the world. Steve talks about how he came to be journalist, how he came to Velonews.com, and how the ongoing allegations to doping in pro cycling may impact the response by fans to this year’s grand tours.

And then Diane talks to some folks she met at the San Diego Custom Bicycle Show, who are making classic bicycle bags and panniers. Eric Hjeltness and the oldest three of his six children have a fascinating story to tell about how the economic downturn presented them with an opportunity to get into the bicycle accessory business.

All this, plus news and calendar on this week’s Outspoken Cyclist.
